Last of the beans and peas are being picked

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

We’ve had a terrific summer but fall is on the way, and that means frost is here. The last of the beans and peas are being picked this week, so if anyone wants to put some away in the freezer for the cold days of winter, now is the time to pick up a 15 pound bag of beans for $15. The same size peas are $18.

The contact is Stephanie Williams:  stephanie.williams@altalink.ca

What is ‘green manure’?

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Our customers often ask why Lund’s produce tastes so good.  The answer is not a quick tidy explanation; there are many facets behind the quality that L.O.F. achieves.  Adhering to certified organic growing standards is certainly a big part of the flavor and character of our vegetables, but beyond that I think the practice of replenishing the land fortifies all the goodness that is already there- right in the soil.   In order to do this effectively Lund’s employs the use of ‘green manure‘.   A certain percentage of the farm’s arable land is dedicated to growing oats or rye which are perfect for enriching topsoil that can often become exhausted of its growing capabilities from the cultivation of food crops.  When the grain/green manure is ready it is tilled under and the decomposition that follows restores vitality to the soil.

Green manure is a safe and effective way of keeping your soil healthy.  It is no wonder that the vegetables cultivated in this soil are so tasty- this dirt is well cared for!
